We are getting married in New York City on November 14th, 2012 and are excited to share our joy (and all of the accompanying details and marginalia!) with you, our family and friends.

Love,
Anaïs and Ian

For the past while, Ian and I have been gathering tons (tons) of supplementary materials about our relationship for immigration purposes: mix tracklists, photos, emails, chats, call records, Skype records, gifts, blog posts, essays about our relationship, wedding blog, you name it. We are obviously going to include our wedding announcement that we sent out (to many of you!) and I realized I’d never scanned it and shared it here. I chose the Hicok and Ian chose the Dunn and the rest we did together. Lipstick is, as always, Nars Heat Wave.

We were going to get these closer to our actual wedding date but we finally got to them a few months into being newlyweds!

I texted this to Ian with the caption, “hey they kiss now.” also, I might have gotten outsassed in this photo pairing. why is your hand stuck in the couch, tiny Ian?

Notice how she looks like a cute little girl and I look like a goon. I have no idea why my hand is stuck in the couch, but I do remember that couch well.

NY Times: Field Notes—’Surrounded by Love All Day’

“In a very short period of time, we realized that he has the perfect personality, the perfect understanding and sensitivity,” Mr. McSweeney said. “The guy talks about his wife all the time, and he’s happily married. He’s somebody who has everything going for him. It’s a perfect fit.”

Mr. Mitchell, 47, has performed more than 27,000 wedding ceremonies. He still loves it, and he still tears up from time to time.

“On Sundays, I look forward to coming to work,” he said. “It might be my 50th or 100th, but it’s still their only marriage ceremony, and I want to do my last as well as my first,” he said.

Ian was looking at this when he realized, “Hey! Isn’t this the guy who married us?” and it was (Michelle probably remembers him, too)! We are one of the 27,000+ couples he has married in his time at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau and I have to tell you, he kind of made it for us. There was no boredom or impatience and he seemed genuinely thrilled to be marrying us and I’m sure every single other couple that was waiting after us. He had a booming, commanding voice and he gave that moment of becoming legally bound to the person you adore the weight and importance it deserves. This man is a mensch, thanks for making our wedding and the start to our life together perfect.

All of this (and dude has SUCH a perfect voice for his job), and also

His favorite day was Sunday, July 24, 2011, when same-sex marriage became legal in New York State. He officiated at only one ceremony that day, but 484 marriages were performed at the bureau’s five offices.

“We were a part of history,” he said. “And then the love and excitement and the joy. Everyone who came out of the chapel got a cheer. It was like you were in a stadium. It was phenomenal.”

Edit: Okay, I just watched the video and I legitimately teared up a little when you hear him performing a ceremony, because it might as well have been ours.

If anyone wants to know more about our actual wedding ceremony, here’s a little bit of background!

This is our last post from NYC and we have to grab lunch before getting to the airport but we wanted to thank everyone for their kind words and love and support. You helped from afar to make this an amazing day and basically the best wedding we could have hoped for.

This is our last post from NYC and we have to grab lunch before getting to the airport but we wanted to thank everyone for their kind words and love and support. You helped from afar to make this an amazing day and basically the best wedding we could have hoped for.

Since we’ve gotten married, we’ve had good friends send us delicious cupcakes from Crumbs that we’re still working on eating, saw Horse Feathers play thanks to another good friend’s lovely wedding gift of tickets, got drunk on the champagne sent by friends, ate lots of delicious food at Spitzer’s Corner, Pies n’ Thighs, and, of course, Shake Shack, Ian’s other wife. I took this photo of Ian’s adorable face (and toque) there and he grumbled about it (and me posting it) of course. Two days into marriage is pretty great.

In our wedding finery, mostly for our moms. (Hi, moms!)

mix download!

We’ve heard that some people are having issues downloading the mix so here’s a direct link to it on our dropbox: Download! Also, if you’ve reblogged it, could you be a dear and change the link to the one linked here? Thank you!

As we’ve been promising friends and family for… a while now, we made a mix for our relationship/marriage/wedding. We’ve been posting the extras from our long, complicated, often contentious (at least on Anaïs’s side) process of assembling this mix, but these 18 songs are the ones we couldn’t picture changing. Sometimes the lyrics literally depict what our life together has been like, sometimes it’s the feeling of the song, but the whole of these 80 minutes are “our song.” We hope you enjoy it!
P.S. Anaïs basically chose the album art because it made us look like we were on the cover of a Belle & Sebastian album. Yeah.

1. Joanna Newsom — Good Intentions Paving CompanyI’m sold; I am home on that rangeAnaïs: I put this on the first mix I ever made Ian because it conveyed how strongly I felt for him from early on and how huge I knew it was from even then. Ian: I listened to this mix for the first time walking home at night and when I got to this song I was overwhelmed because for the first time I thought Anaïs might have feelings for me.
2. Elbow — Starlingsyou are the only thing in any room you’re ever inIan: My mixes have included a number of Elbow songs, and this was on my list for future mixes… and Anaïs knew that and demanded we use it here. But it still counts as my song!Anaïs: It’s not my fault someone didn’t put this on a mix for me fast enough! A lot of Elbow songs are romantic and appropriate for this but this one is just perfect and majestic, much like a wedding processional.
3. Marvin Gaye — Too Busy Thinking About My Babyshe’s some kind of wonderful, yes she is Anaïs: It came down to picking between this and a Beatles song and I realized there was no way you could overlook Marvin. Loving Ian feels like this song, big and joyful, some kind of wonderful indeed. Ian: This song is literally my life since we’ve been together, as all the people I owe emails and phone calls to can tell you.
4. Kid606 — Temptation (New Order cover)I’ve never met anyone quite like you beforeIan: I recently finally found out where this cover version is from… a limited release compilation celebrating the label boss’s marriage. So, even more perfect than I originally thought. Anaïs: Let’s be real, New Order is easily my favorite band of all time (sorry, Talking Heads) and this is my favorite New Order song (Mine too! Aren’t you glad you’re going to marry the guy with all those New Order reissues? —Ian). When I heard this gorgeous version on the birthday mix Ian made for me, I swooned hard.
5. Low — Closerwords we’ll never take backIan: I first heard this song over a decade ago, and I knew from the first time I heard it I’d put it on a mix for the woman I’d ask to marry me. Anaïs: I loved this song before I met Ian, it always felt holy and solemn to me, like marriage vows in a way.
6. The Magnetic Fields — The Book of Loveand you, you oughta give me wedding ringsIan: There are a lot of super romantic Magnetic Fields songs and we had been trading them back and forth on mixes… I still can’t believe I beat her to this one, the most romantic of all.Anaïs: It’ll tell you how grossly in love with Ian I am that it doesn’t even bother my intensely competitive spirit to have been beaten with this song.
7. Twin Sister — I Want a Housejust so long as I can live with youAnaïs: We almost put another Twin Sister song on here but this is the one that Ian is obsessed with, in the best way! I put this on my first mix for him because I knew pretty early on that, yeah, he could paint it any color he liked.Ian: I also knew she could paint it any colour she liked, and not just because I hate painting things. The vocals on this song sound to me like something you’d coo into somebody’s ear as you’re both falling asleep.
8. Six by Seven — Oh! Dearyou leave my mouth open wideIan: I’ve loved this song since high school, but it’s so intense I knew I’d never put it on a mix until it was for keeps. I actually worried this song might be a bit much when I put it on a mix for Anaïs, but it’s how I feel. Anaïs: I had never heard Six by Seven or this song before Ian gave it to me but it hit me hard when I did hear it. It might make me weird but I’ve listened to it at least once a day since he gave it to me.
9. The Weakerthans — The ReasonsYou might roll your eyes at this, but I’m so glad that you exist Ian: Someone might have once made the mistake of not assuming that someone else from 1200 miles away could maybe not have heard of the Weakerthans and has been paying for it ever since. I still mean it, though.Anaïs: Someone might have loved the Weakerthans for a long, long time before they came across some Canadian. No but really, I have major feelings about John K. Samson and squealed when this was on a mix for me. I might have even been secretly smug that someone was so impressed that I knew who they were (Secretly? Really? Secretly? —Ian).
10. The Zombies — This Will Be Our Yearthe warmth of your love’s like the warmth of the sunAnaïs: Personally, my lyric choice for this would be “it took a long time to come” even though in the big picture I’m not so old. I used to not really know why certain things happened in life the way they did but since I met Ian, my life seems to have more context and actually make sense. It may be corny but I have a feeling every year will be our year.Ian: Anaïs put this on a mix for me, and I put a cover of it on her next mix, partly because it was at the beginning of a year that we knew would include our wedding. It seemed appropriate.
11. Japandroids — The House That Heaven Builttell ‘em all they’ll love in my shadowIan: This song just feels like a wide-open, invincible love to me.Anaïs: Ian was worried this song might rock too hard for this mix but then I reminded him that our love rocked too hard for this world so yeah.
12. Talking Heads — This Might Be the Place (Naïve Melody)did I find you or you find me?Anaïs: Ok, so this is my favorite song of all time and it’s arguably our song. It’s a perfect love song about already being home. Plus, you can dance to it.Ian: We once did an informal poll at Stylus and we all agree: This is the greatest love song of all time. I got Anaïs a cross-stitch with “home is where I wanna be, but I guess I’m already there” on it, because it’s true.
13. Big Star — Thirteenwould you be an outlaw for my love?Anaïs: Alex Chilton and I share a birthday so I’ve always felt a musical/spiritual connection there. I was shocked/thrilled when Ian told me he had never really listened to Big Star because that meant I could put this song on a mix for him and have it be the loveliest surprise, a hard thing to do with him.Ian: We were trying to figure out a running order for this mix, and we had iTunes randomize most of the songs, just to get ideas. This wound up as number thirteen, and that seemed too perfect to change.
14. Spiritualized — Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (Original Elvis Mix)and I will love you ‘til I die, and I will love you all the timeIan: We still fight over who said this would be our first dance if we were having a traditional wedding first, but I definitely know that Anaïs knew and loved the officially released version of this song and that “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is her favourite Elvis song, so I couldn’t wait to play this (unreleased, quasi-legal) version for her.Anaïs: I would have a comment for this song but I can’t hear anything over my tears every time I hear this song.
15. The Kinks — Strangersall the things I own I will share with youAnaïs: This has forever been in my head as the perfect recessional song and since we’re not having a traditional wedding, it seems like the recessional that will be playing in the back of my mind after we tie the knot.Ian: I grew up with the Kinks being played on cassette during family road trips, but I’d never heard this song until Anaïs introduced me to it. It seems fitting that a band that was such a big part of my childhood would be, in a new form, part of my new family.
16. Rilo Kiley — I NeverI got nothing to give you, you see, except everything, everything, everything, everything Anaïs: I feel like I’ve carried a torch for this song for a long, long time, keeping it as my one and only someone song. Like I myself did, this song found a home with Ian instantly.Ian: This song makes me very emotional, but more importantly, ask Anaïs how often I bust out a sweeping “Iiii’m only a woman” when we’re together.
17. Adem — To Cure a Weakling Child + Girl/Boy Songmy feet, my arms, and my ears, and you’ll beIan: If you’d told me that a cover of two of noted techno brat Aphex Twin’s songs together would be the most romantic song I know before I heard Adem’s version, I would have laughed. This song is the sound of me falling in love with my wife.Anaïs: This is going to sound slightly ridiculous but this song is the audio equivalent of what being really and truly in love feels like: bright, hopeful, precious to someone in a way you’ve never thought possible.
18. The Sundays — Summertimeis this how it happens?Anaïs: Those horns! But really, this song is appropriate to starting a life, your life, with the person you’ve been waiting for your whole life and weren’t sure even existed. But they do and it’s all summertime from here on out, so to speak.Ian: This is how it happens!
